约瑟夫·乔丹尼亚，出生且受教于格鲁吉亚。1978年获第比利斯国立音乐院荣誉文凭，1982获第比利斯国立音乐院哲学博士，1991年于基辅国立音乐院再获音乐学博士学位。1993年开始为第比利斯国立音乐院教授，1995年成为澳大利亚及格鲁吉亚公民，居住在澳大利亚，为墨尔本大学音乐系荣誉研究员。 乔丹尼亚著作等身，并以英语、法语、西班牙语、芬兰语、汉语、阿拉伯语、保加利亚语、俄语、格鲁吉亚等语言出版，包括两本关于传统复音音乐的专门著作。其中第二本著作《谁问了第一个问题？人类合唱、智力、语言及言语的起源》(2006以英语出版)荣获2009年日本小泉文夫民族音乐学大奖。 乔丹尼亚于1984年开始组织系列传统复音音乐会议。他是第比利斯国立音乐院国际传统复音音乐研究中心创始成员以及外国部门的领导人。
